A little story about our humble begginings

THE INCEPTION

Picture the scene… you’re at the afters, the night has reached its vanishing point. But the fug of the hotboxed room is pregnant with an idea. An idea begotten by Lily and Felix, they joke how cool it would be to have a magazine celebrating the art and brains of their friends, and Lily tells Felix of an idea she had already had of a repository for all the very best nights out in Bristol. For the meantime the idea is put aside.

IN THE OVEN

Through the slog and toil of his job building stages at festivals, Felix is given many hours to ruminate over the practicalities. How could we actually make this happen? The only half unfortunate event of being unfairly laid off from the job compels Felix that this is a worthy project. While Felix pours over logistics, Lily is beginning to cook up ideas for what the magazine will become.

FIRST MEETING

Word is spread of this fertile new idea, and a crack team of editors and directors is found. The team is finalized. With Ruben as Creative Director, Virginia as Artist Liaison and Noah as Chief Editor, Lily and Felix’s idea is becoming realer by the day.  They assemble the team at Casa del Anecdotes and begin brainstorming ideas, spit balling potential titles and forming the ethos of the magazine.  

ETHOS

Putting their heads together, the team decide that the ethos of the magazine is one of creative collaboration, celebration and speculation. They are committed to opening a space of cultural archivism, whilst exploring the theoretical underpinnings of what this culture is. Above all else, this magazine is about creating a bridge between people through love of a culture

ARTICLES BEGIN

Anecdotes begins reaching out its many arms to find the very best article contributors to engage in its speculative cultural project. Ideas were generated left, right and centre, a rough theme for this issue was beginning to emerge. It became clear that there was a desire to explore the fastness of contemporary culture, primarily nightlife. Noah begins work with article writers to create pieces. 

ART CREATION BEGINS

All the while, Vi and Ruben are working away with the artists to create concepts to make the magazine visually scrumptious as well as intellectually satisfying. They workshop ideas, media and techniques, finding the best ways to align the visual and cultural aspects of the publication. Trial and error over months of hard work produces the incredible art which builds Anecdotes. 

TAKING SHAPE

Whilst Noah and Vi work on the ingredients for the magazine, Ruben, Felix and Lily begin to come with a recipe. In broad strokes, how will this all fit together? A form emerges, an order designed to guide the reader through their own thoughts and feelings about the material. Ideas for how we can celebrate Bristol culture are inserted into the core of the magazine. 

FINALISATION

Thanks to the beautiful, hard work of everybody involved, the articles and the art have reached their final form. They are ready to be compiled by Ruben. Whilst off grid in South Africa, Ruben worked tirelessly (with no wifi!) to piece together the final product that you see before you. Many revisions are made, many ideas recycled and replaced. But its there, in front of our eyes. 

PRINTING

After seemingly endless back and forth with the printers, numerous arguments over borders, bleeds and spacing, the magazines arrived (in the nick of time). They are there, tangible, bendable and smelling exactly how you would expect them to. 

ISSUE 2

Fast forward 5 months… and you catch us up here at the outset of issue 2. Through the peril of exam season and the blistering heat, the Anecdotes Team have worked around the clock to bring you an even better edition, this time all about Alternative Spaces.
